How to Make Money Online in Kenya

In Africa, Kenya is among the top countries that are advanced in technology. This has made Kenyans participate in websites that offer opportunities online.

However, some people have joined the online space to make money and have made no money. Also, most people end up being conned by fraudsters.

Based on my experience working online for almost five years and having failed for three years, I will guide you through the article on the right way you can make money online.

Ways to Make Money Online in Kenya

Freelancing and Remote Work

Freelancers offer services like editing, writing, web development, transcription, data entry, and more. For you to make money online, you need to learn some freelancing skills and then monetize them.

These freelancing services can operate remotely, meaning you only need good internet access and a laptop or smartphone.

Platforms that offer freelancing services are Fiverr, Upwork, and Freelancers.

Blogging and Content Creation

As a blogger, you can start a blog, share knowledge by writing articles, and monetize from it. You can join ad networks like Adsterra, AdSense, and Mediavine when your website has met eligibility in their programs.

Medium and Blogger offer free blogging platforms to start your business, while WordPress is advanced.

You can also create YouTube videos and get paid through Google AdSense when you are eligible for monetization.

Also, websites like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram offer content creators a space for creating content and later monetizing it when they are eligible.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing allows you to promote products and earn commissions for every sale you make through your referral link.

To do affiliate marketing, you need a landing page or a website to showcase what you sell online. You can also share affiliate links through social media, but most social platforms discourage this.

You can run adverts of these products on platforms like Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, and X by paying an advertising fee.

Based on your niche, you can look for relevant affiliate programs to work with. Some of popular affiliate programs are Amazon Associates, Jumia, Digistore24, among others.

Holding and Trading Coins

In Kenya, some people invest in crypto coins in the crypto exchanges. They do technical and market analysis for different coins like Bitcoin, Pi, Worldcoin, Ethereum, Athene, and others in the exchanges. They buy, hold, and sell when the value appreciates. Others do spot trading to maximize their money online.

E-Commerce and Dropshipping

E-Commerce entails buying products at a low or market price then selling it at a high price to make a profit. Dropshipping is a type of e-commerce which includes shipping services that are done by manufacturers.

What you do here is that you work as a broker. To start, you can create your e-commerce website with Amazon or Shopify or create your website from scratch.

But creating your website from scratch may mean problems working with the product manufacturers. I recommend you use Shopify and Amazon.

Note that both e-commerce and Dropshipping are expensive to start. You need to buy domain and hosting, as well as some skills and capital to run ads.

Online Surveys and Microtasks

Doing online surveys is the easiest way to make money online in Kenya, but again not my recommended way of making money online.

Survey websites pay low amounts and also need more of your time.

You can do microtasks online through websites like Micro Workers and Sprout Gigs. You can do microtasks like following social media accounts, writing articles, watching videos, and more.

Online Tutoring and Coaching

Online tutoring requires you to know popular languages like English, Spanish, and Chinese among others so that you can be able to teach these popular languages to those people who want to learn them.

People out there are willing to learn these languages, so they look for tutors to teach them. You can, therefore, coach them for over three months based on their contract with you or their willingness.

You can do online tutoring jobs on sites like Tutor Me.

Social Media and Influencer Marketing

Most of the influencers make their money by posting paid posts and videos on social media accounts.

Now, you think it’s impossible for you since you have a small following, that’s not the case. Nano Influencers need to post contents around the targeted brands and also have a following of atleast 1000 people.

However, we have apps like Wowzi that accept influencers who have a following of 250 and above in Kenya.

Also, you can monetize your content on social media like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X.

Selling Digital products

Selling digital products is the easiest way to make money online in Kenya. What you are required to do is create a digital product, like an eBook, that can solve somebody’s problem. If you are not able to solve somebody’s problem, then this will not work for you.

Let’s say I don’t know how to cook, I will look for cooking recipes that satisfy my preferences.

You can sell your digital products on Amazon Kindle Publishing, Kobo, and also on your main website.

Sell Stock Photos

Some sites sell photos online, and people buy from them so that they can use them for their projects. You need a smartphone with a good camera or a camera and a laptop.

This equipments will help you to take good photos, edit them and also uploading them to popular sites for people to buy your photos.

Some of these sites that sell stock photos online are Shutterstock, Stock, and Getty Images.

Learning any Programming Language

Programming languages like Python, JavaScript, C, HTML, Java, and CSS are marketable in this land of artificial intelligence. The skills gained from learning these languages led to the creation of Apps and other projects.

With these skills, you can solve a problem associated with coding in this digital era.

Websites that offer these services are W3Schools and FreeCamp.org

Investing

Investing in Kenya can also make you money because it’s digitalized nowadays.

You can buy shares from a stock market like Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) and also invest with the Best Saccos in Kenya.

Investing in Securities, the government, through the Central Bank of Kenya, buys securities, that is, treasury bills and bonds from people for them to finance their administration.

Online Gambling

Most youths in Kenya make money online through betting sites. Online gambling uses the concept of using money to make money.

In online gambling, one has to master their emotions in order for to be able to control themselves when they either win or lose the bet.

Some of the online gambling sites include Betika, 1Xbet, Game Mania, and Lucky Win.

Joining Crypto Projects

Crypto projects can take between six months to even five years them to launch. You can register and mine these projects, then wait until they are launched to make good money.

You can get these projects from crypto insights on browsers, YouTube, and also Crypto friends.

Some of the projects that took place in Kenya are Worldcoin, X-Empire coin, Pi coin, and Athene coin. Make sure to chip in early in any coming project like Human App and others.

Challenges of Making Money Online in Kenya

Payment Gateways. Some people quit making money from online jobs because they do not pay using Mpesa or Kenya shilling. Some online websites work globally, such as Upwork. What you need is an online payment gateways that offer foreign accounts to less developed countries. These payment gateways include Payoneer, Wise, Grey, PayPal, Cleva, etc.

High Competition. The competition is high because many people in Kenya are trying to earn an income online. To overcome this, you need to be consistent and also offer quality work over quantity for you to retain your clients.
